Glay

This past weekend Glay made it's way overseas for the first time to tour in the U.S.  And by the U.S, I mean California, but whatever... that's good enough for me. I've waited eight years to see Glay, so I took this opportunity to take a break from life and head out to L.A. to see them play.

I went to both LA shows and both were amazing. They played a good set. A few songs off their latest album, but mostly crowd pleasing favorites from throughout the last 15 years of their career.  My all time favorite was/is Shutter Speeds no Teema when Jiro (bass) gets to take over the stage and shine.

I was surprised by the amount of English Teru (vocals) spoke.  And it wasn't just memorized English that I've seen from other Japanese artists, but when he made errors he knew it and was able to compensate.  Impressive.

The venue played was House of Blues on Sunset Strip. It is fairly small stage, so the set wasn't as elaborate as would be seen in Japan and Glay wasn't as dressed up as they might be, but they also weren't dress down.  Hisashi (lead guitar)  was looking spectacular with a one sleeved jacket and a fishnet shirt.  Though, I was sadly disappointed that he wasn't showing this legs as he's done in the past.  Jiro was also looking great as always and as stated by an author of the SFWeekly.com blog All Shook Down,  "I was so distracted by how ridiculously adorable the bass player was that I may have, um, missed some of what the other guys were doing."  I think that says it all.

  1. I remember you going to another J-rock concert at some point; was that Dir en Grey?

  2. What proportion of the audience was made up of screaming anime fans?

  3. What proportion of (2) was obnoxious?

1. I've been to Dir en Grey shows, and a couple other ones a anime conventions.

2. They were all there because the like the band, not because of some theme song they've sung. Actually, I don't even know if they've every done an opening/closing song for an anime.

3. Absolutely none, it was great.

That sounds like it was pretty awesome, then :) It's good to know the audience wasn't dominated by #2. Because the result of that is obnoxious.

(fyi:
Glay have done some work for anime productions (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-06-14/rock-band-glay-to-perform-3-concerts-in-california). Nothing that strikes me as being obviously mainstream, though.)

Well, that's also obnoxious

LJ's comment system strips out / converts HTML in comments left by OpenID users, it seems.
